Primary Stability and Stiffness of Ankle Arthrodesis Techniques – Crossed Screws vs. Anterior Plating
نویسندگان
چکیده
Introduction Despite recent advances with total ankle replacement designs, ankle arthrodesis still remains the gold standard in treating symptomatic end-stage osteoarthritis. Among all techniques, screw fixation has shown to be one of the most applied techniques to perform ankle fusions. Due to a considerable rate of failures of conventional cross-screw techniques, more recently, a more anatomically shaped anterior double plate system has been introduced with a union rate of 100%. The purpose of the present biomechanical study was to compare the primary stability and stiffness of two groups of ankle fusion constructs crossed screw fixation and the anterior double plate system.

First Metatarsophalangeal Joint Arthrodesis: A Retrospective Comparison of Crossed-screws, Locking and Non-Locking Plate Fixation with Lag Screw
Background:Locking plate fixation is increasingly used for first metatarsophalangeal joint (MTP-I) arthrodesis. Still there is few comparable clinical data regarding this procedure. Methods:We retrospectively evaluated 60 patients who received an arthrodesis of the MTP-I between January 2008 and June 2010. With 20 patients each we performed a locking plate fixation with lag screw, arthrodesis w...

متن کاملWeight-bearing recommendations after first metatarsophalangeal joint arthrodesis fixation: a biomechanical comparison
BACKGROUND This study sought to determine whether several metatarsophalangeal (MTP) fusion techniques require complete immobilization or if some level of weight-bearing could be recommended after surgery. A comparison of synthetic composite to actual bone was included in order to examine the validity of the testing conditions. METHODS Four MTP fusion modalities were tested in synthetic compos...
متن کاملBiomechanical comparison of first metatarsophalangeal joint arthrodeses using triple-threaded headless screws versus partially threaded lag screws.
BACKGROUND Triple-threaded, cannulated headless screws of varying thread diameters and pitch are designed to maintain thread length across the arthrodesis plane, provide joint compression, and reduce countersinking. This study tested the biomechanical fixation strength of conventional partially threaded lag screws compared to triple-threaded headless screws in first metatarsophalangeal joint ar...
